Artist Statement
Making objects by hand that are commonly mass-produced may seem like an irrational act. But for me it is a deliberate rebellion, a way to create more opportunities for physical and emotional connection. I make objects that are used for eating and drinking. These objects transcend barriers of language, culture and time by connecting people through shared experiences.
Emotions, memories and associations are evoked when our haptic abilities are engaged through shape, texture, weight and even temperature. Color, pattern and imagery intrigue and arouse us.
Taking advantage of the unique materiality of clay, I make objects that look soft and sensuous and elicit the instinct to touch. I layer colorful floral motifs over and under fragments of maps and text. Information is revealed and obscured, drawing the viewer in to look and hopefully, to touch.
